There have been advances as well as setbacks for the LGBT+ community in the 2000’s. In the US, Vermont was the first state to pass a civil union law in 2001. Civil Unions allowed same-sex couples the same economic benefits and protection as heterosexual couples but didn't recognize them as “married” on a national level. Most Civil Union arrangements included same-sex couples the right to adopt, although not all. Civil Union laws continued to sweep the states, as well as the countries around the world in the upcoming years, including Portugal, Geneva, Quebec, Finland, and Argentina.
