The Rebirth of the K.K.K
By Savi Krumenauer
In 1915 in Atlanta Georgia the “Second KKK” or other names “ The Rebirth of the KKK” started up again. The second KKK is a group of white supremacist organization that expanded through the country as an era of anti- blacks political act to protect the American values, and a way of life from blacks, immigrants, Jews, Atheists, bootleggers and hosts of of these peoples. They preached one hundred percent Americanism, demanded purification, in politics, strict mortality, and enforcement of prohibition.
Two events in 1915 are widely credited with inspiration of the rebirth: Public lynching of Leo Frank and the release of “ The Birth of a Nation”. Taking advantage of the sudden popularity, William Joseph Simmons organized what is called the second KKK. In 1921 started a modern business style of full-time paid recruiters, and referred to themselves as an organization, which was developing country wide at this time. The headquarters made business through the sales of costumes and initiation fees. Growing rapidly they reflected on social tension in rural and urban America, it reached every state and many bigger cities.
They maintained an extensive surveillance system that included tapping phone conversations, spies at the post offices. Which led to many tragedies such as Bertha Lowman and her two brother lynched in 1926 but no one was ever prosecuted because the sheriff, all the deputies, the city attorney, and the state representative were all belonged to the Klan. The membership of the Klan soared in Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, Portland, while the Klan endorsed candidates running for mayor, that won in Indianapolis, Denver and Atlanta. In many states the Klan dominated politics to a level that one could not be elected without the support of the KKK.
After months of recruitment, the Klan membership has increased to 85,000 members at its peak in the 20’s, they claimed to have 15 percent of all eligible populations of 4-5 million white men. The criminal behavior, and external opponents collapsed thousands of members to 30,000 thousand in the mid 30’s and dissipated by the 40’s and only appeared in such a diminished force during the Civil Rights Movement in 1950’s-1960-’s.
