Porfirio Diaz
The Great War or World War One was a fight between two groups of allies one: U.S., Britain, France, Russia, and Italy, two: Germany, Austria Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire of Bulgaria. There was millions of casualties at the end of this war and not many of them were from Latin America. Latin America was not very involved in the war, Brazil was the only country that declared war on Germany and consistently deployed troops. There were several other Latin American countries that joined the war towards the end. Other countries either broke ties with Germany or remained neutral. Mexico aided the British navy by supplying oil and is well known for the Zimmerman Letter. The Zimmerman Letter was intercepted communication between Germany and Mexico by the British Intelligence. The letter included a proposal from Germany to join forces with Germany’s financing. For Mexico’s contribution to the war, Germany would return Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas to Mexico. It was one of the biggest events in Latin America during WW1 when British Intelligence intercepted the signal.
The war caused many Latin American countries to break ties with Europe, which left them in a bad position. The United States had conferences with many countries regarding finance, commerce, and transportation. After the conference Latin America decided to accept help from the U.S.. When WW1 started in Europe in 1914 the Mexican Revolution was going strong. The Mexican Revolution involved the president of Mexico, Porfirio Diaz. As president he secured his position by force which caused the public opinion of him to be negative, but he had support from businesses because he was known for the economic growth and stability of Mexico during his rule. Diaz’s policies allowed the wealthy people to acquire so many resources that it made others unable to make wages, which caused the start of the Mexican Revolution.
