Hip Hop began in poverty-stricken South Bronx. Hip-hop culture affects many young people and shapes their idea of modern culture. Hip-hop is obviously a general term for a more complex and involved culture. Hip-hop is not only rap, rhymes, breakdancing, DJ’s, MC’s, clothing, and language but also history and a feeling of belonging. Hip Hop was created by and because of the African American population. The young people of the African American community felt and continue to feel the pain and suffering that their history brings, with that suffering hip-hop culture was born. Hip Hop is both a song of freedom and a song of redemption, struggle and the hardships of modern-day African American culture. Hip Hop is both sayings I am free and a part of this society and I am stifled because of my circumstance.
There are four main components of hip-hop in a classical term, that includes b-boying (break dancing), DJing, graffiti painting, and MCing. Obviously, we have branched out from then, but those were the four main physical elements to hip-hop. Grafitti and breakdancing became the first of the effects of hip-hop culture that caught the attention of the youth at that time in the 90’s. There were many influencers and craters of the hip-hop culture that exists today. One of many of those creators was DJ Kool Herc sometimes called the father of hip-hop, Kool Herc began what would, later on, become his career to himself and many others. Kool Herc used turntables to merge old records with new hits and merged the two creating a continuous flow of dance music. Kool Herc brought his music to many inner-city parties and gatherings moving and exciting young people everywhere. Part of the music aspect of Hip-hop was the spoken word poetry said over the beat of the turntable.
Hip-hop not only inspired people like B.I.G, Tupac, and Jay-Z but everyone who listened to their music. When you listen to Hip Hop music you feel like you're apart of something in a way that I haven't experienced with other music genres. Hip Hop encompasses teen angst, hardship, joy, drugs, responsibility, and sex into one SICK BEAT. This music is influenced by reggae and blues, mixing culture, complexity, and rhythm into a song everyone wants to hear.
Not only does Hip Hop culture influence through music and dance, but also through fashion. The fashion industry was drastically changed too when this new wave of media became popularized. Street wear became quite popular at this time to the present. The fashion and swag that people in the hood had and took pride in, became recognized in the world of clothing. Everyday-people wanted to dress like these rich rappers and influencers, they wanted to look like someone who had something to say about the world. These clothes are relevant today in making normal people feel like they could be a part of something bigger.
