Mao Zedong, the cultural revolution leader
|
The cultural revolution began in the 1960’s. this Revolution was started by a Communist party leader named Mao Zedong who had come to feel that the current leadership in China was moving too far in a revisionist Direction. Mao started the revolution by gathering a group of young radicals including his wife. both Mao and the group of radicals took action and attacked current party leadership. this cultural revolution was known as The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. during 1966 in August Mao and his group of proletarians shut down the schools and asked for the youth to fight against the bourgeoisie values that current Party leaders held. As the youth got excited they began to form paramilitary groups and they called themselves the red guards. the red guards harassed and attacked China's elderly and intellectual population. Soon the Red Guard and other groups like it begin to take different interpretations of Mao’s original revolutionary idea. During this time the revolutionist began removing people from Power such as the president Liu Shaoqi and other communist leaders as well. Liu Shaoqi was beaten and imprisoned and died while in prison in 1969.
After Liu was imprisoned, all hell broke loose essentially. The different factions of the red guard began their battle for complete dominance, and Mao became worried that his original idea for the revolution had been completely misinterpreted or at least over-exaggerate. Mao taking responsibility for the chaos that was now running wild sent send troops to defeat the ed guard. During this “reign” of the Red Guard, the Chinese economy plummeted as well as industrial production. Mao and his defense minister Lin began to try and regain power over the red guard and China. Lin was soon named Mao’s successor, began to institute martial law because of the border clashes with the Soviets. Mao began to feel worried at Lin’s grab at power and began the process to split the power of the Chinese government with Zhou Enlai, China’s premier. Lin soon after died in an airplane crash. Much of the Chinese population began to see the holes in the idea of the revolution and the power trip that Mao had been on. Zhou began the process of restoring power and order to the Chinese government and appointing many former officials to power. |
