The Taliban came into existence in September of 1994, fronted by Mullah Mohammed Omar. It was a fundamentalist political movement in Afghanistan, taking an extreme and violent approach to enforcing Islamic Sharia law, a set of religious rules stemming from the Quran and Hadith. Between the years of 1996 to 2001, the Taliban had power over roughly 3/4 of Afghanistan— and at it’s peak, 90%.
