Social media is a unique place for individuals to connect and network with other people and groups in a way that’s completely new. The ability to use Social Media dates back to 1997 with the creation of Six Degrees. Six Degrees, named after the theory of six degrees of separation, is recognized as the first platform created that allowed people to interact with each other online. Since then, social media has slowly changed the way humans connect and relate to other humans. By the year 2000 the internet was everywhere. It was commonly used for chat groups and meeting new people. Everyone had easy access to medias that allowed them to socially engage in this new and strange way. Then here was a “social media surge” in 2003 with the creation of MySpace. This was the original profile website where people could show off who they were to be able to meet new people.
Another huge year in this timeline of Social Media was 2005, when Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook. Facebook would become the biggest social media outlet in the world. Today over a billion people use facebook and it is the number one social media website. With twitter being released in 2006 social media became one of the most popular ways to meet and interact with people. Today, Twitter has over 500 million users. With more websites and social media platforms becoming popular into the later 2000’s it became common to use them for businesses. Business cards and commercials would state there instagram or facebook. Social media icons became more and more used.
Most social media platforms today are geared for one purpose or another. Linkedin, for example, was created for professionals to have a place for communication between each other. Social media has spread and grown throughout America and the world. Humans are social animals and it makes perfect sense why these methods for connection have become so popular. Even though we can’t predict the future, it is almost guaranteed that social media will continue being used for generations. New technologies and platforms will continue to be created and our lives will never be the same.
