The ghost dance started because of a Paiute Native American named Wovoka who said he was there to prepare the Native Americans for their salvation. This movement began when Wovoka had a dream during a solar eclipse in 1889 on January 1, in the dream he said that he went to the spirit world and saw the Native Americans being lifted into the sky. He also said that he saw the earth open up and sucked all the whites in. Then the earth would return to its original state and Native Americans with their ancestors would be put back on the earth to live in peace.
Lakota also spoke openly about why they were dancing the ghost dance, when some other Native American tribes. This eventually got the BIA agents that were watching the Lakota tribe to send in the tribal police. Their job was to arrest a respected leader of the Lakota tribe named sitting bull. This was made him stop the dance.
(BIA) or the Bureau of Indian affairs got involved was when they noticed that a large group of native Americans were gathering and participating in an event that they didn't know about. The dance was a big part of this religious movement. It was danced in a circular fashion for a long time.
When the Bureau of Indian affairs notices that this movement now called the ghost dance came to the Lakota orthopedic team very uneasy erring on the side of the alarm. The Bureau of Indian affairs, said that the Lakota, had created a militarized version of the ghost's. They also made ghost shirts these ghost shirts were believed to stop bullets.
This ending up in a struggle, sitting bull and a number of policemen were killed. The remaining policeman was eventually helped out by a small group of cavalry that helped them escape. After sitting bull was killed the seventh cavalry was sent by the United States, to control and disarm the Lakota. The events that followed are known as the wounded knee massacre where 457 soldiers fired at the Sioux killing 200 of the Sioux, with the ghost dance reached its height shortly before this massacre in 1890.
