Since the Twin Towers bombing on September 11 2001, there have been 69 deaths by the hands of right wing terrorism in the United States. Data from the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (or START) shows that 92% of all ideologically motivated homicide incidents in the U.S. between 2007-2016 were by right wing extremists or white supremacists.
There have been several major right wing terrorist attacks in American in the past 2 decades. A handful of them include the Knoxville Unitarian Universalist Church shooting, the Wisconsin Sikh Temple shooting, the Overland Park Jewish Community Center shooting, the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church shooting, the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood shooting, and the Unite the Right Rally attack and homicide.
The Knoxville Unitarian Universalist Church shooting occurred on July 27th, 2008 when Jim David Adkisson opened fire on an audience attending a youth play of Annie Jr. at the Knoxville Unitarian Universalist Church. 8 people were shot, and two were killed, one of which was Greg McKendry, who stood in front of Jims gun to absorb bullets that otherwise would have rained into the crowd. Jim was stopped when 5 church members managed to constrain him. In later interviews Adkisson claimed that he was motivated by his hatred of democrats, African Americans, homosexuals, and especially liberals. He chose this church for it’s somewhat liberal teachings, claiming that if he can’t get in touch with the liberal politicians, he had to target those that voted liberal.
Wisconsin Sikh Temple shooting happened on August 5th 2012 when Wade Michael Page, a former psychological operations specialist in the U.S. Army and known Hammerskin (white supremacist organization), walked into a Sikh temple with a gun and killed six people. The authorities were called and arrived at the temple to find him, he shot one of the responding police officers and was shot by one in the stomach. Before he could be arrested he shot himself in the head.
Overland Park Jewish Community Center shooting occurred on April 13th 2014 when Frazier Glenn Miller Jr. arrived at the Overland Park Jewish Community Center in Kansas. Miller had driven up from Missouri where he lived because he had heard about a talent show going on at the community center. Miller is a Neo-Nazi who founded the Carolina Knights, a paramilitary racist military organization. That and objects found in his home in Aurora, Missouri (Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler, a shirt with a swastika on it, directions to synagogues, and a flyer about the talent show) all make it obvious that he had planned this trip to Kansas where he killed four people. One pair was a 69 year old man and his 14 year old grandson shot as they were pulling into the parking lot of the community center.
