NATO, The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is an alliance between 29 North American and European countries. It is understood by all countries that if any of them are attacked by an external party, that they will defend against them. The military combined in all countries spending is over 70% the global total. Was signed on April 4th, 1949 by Harry S. Truman.
The 12 counties that were part of founding NATO are Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. There are about 18,000 different military personals around the world working with NATO. Currently, NATO is in Afghanistan helping train and assist 13,000 troops. They make sure that the laws are being followed and the correct protocols are being followed. They work with the local government and help them through whatever is happening and make sure it's happening the correct ways so that nothing goes wrong. They work with the local environment to mold into a working democracy. They also work on preventing things before they happen. After the 9/11 attacks, NATO moved their focus to preventing terrorist attacks before they happen all around the world. They are there to try and slowly bring peace around the world to the member of NATO and anyone else that isn't a member. They help protect the values of the environment that needs help while also working to protect the greater good. |
