As political terms, “left” and “right” were first used during the French Revolution. These terms were used due to describe where people sat in the French Parliament. The people who sat to the left during this time supported tradition, clericalism, and hierarchy. To the right, were people who supported the Old Regime. The Old Regime was a time when the king had absolute monarchy. During this time the kingdom was broken down into 3 classes, rich, middle and poor . This system favored the rich and gave them power.
All across the board, in countries that have Right Wing Populism parties, these parties are well known and supported for their opposition to immigration. One of the world largest current Right Wing Populism parties is France’s National Front (FN). This group was founded in 1972. This party is most well known for their leader from 1972-2011, Jean-Marie Le Pen. Le Pen has a history in the French government that spans decades. In 1956 Le Pen was elected onto the National Assembly and this really pushed his movement forward. He had this seat for many years and eventually attempted to run for president but fell short. In the early 1980’s the FN had 10 seats on the European Parliament and had strong runners for mayor of large cities like Paris and Dreux. In 1986 the FN had 15 seats on the National Assembly, one of those being Le Pen. The FN went out of its way to separate itself from not just French political parties but pretty much every single mainstream party. In 2002, Le Pen won a startling victory over the social prime minister at the time, Lionel Jospin but since that Le Pen has just spiraled down. In 2008 Le Pen was given a three-month suspension and fined 10,000 euros for comments that violated France’s statute on Holocaust denial. In January of 2011 Le Pen’s daughter Marine Le Pen took over his role as head of the FN. Today Marine is less extreme, but still focuses on anti immigration, which has gained her a lot of followers just as her father did with his xenophobic ideals.
Terror attacks have sparked a lot of turmoil in Europe. There have been many recent terror attacks by people who have immigrated from Middle Eastern countries to Europe. These attacks have boosted Right Wing parties’ popularity due to their extreme ideas on anti immigration. These attacks have affected the entire world and their thoughts on anti immigration.
