The Long March
The long march began after a civil war broke out between the nationalists and the communists in 1927. The communist leader at that time was Mao Zedong who would later rule the soviet republic of china. During this time nationalists released five encirclement campaign
against the soviet republic.
During 1930 and 1934 Chiang Kai-shek launched these campaigns. The communists were able to resist four of the five campaigns using guerilla war tactics. During the fifth campaign the nationalists built a huge force and fortification around the communists.this new leadership introduced new war tactics and and with those tactics, the red army was destroyed.
After this happened the communists realized that their defeat was imminent and ruled to break from the environment at its weakest points. The actual march began on October 16th of 1934. The communists used stealth and other tactics to flee without being noticed. It was several weeks before the nationalists realized almost the entire red army had escaped. The march consisted of around 85,000 troops and accompanying women, children, and men. The march could be seen in the night as a long line of marchers with flaming torches. The people of the red army used horses and their own bodies to carry rations and possessions. At this time Mao began to regain his influence and changed the strategy of the march a bit. Mao decided that separate groups would take separate paths to further confuse the enemy. The final location of the march would be in the Shaanxi province.
Each marcher endured starvation, constant harassment from the nationalists, and brutal conditions. The long march spanned 4,000 miles, crossed 18 mountain ranges, and 24 rivers. Thus the long march had ended. Mao emerged a great and fearless leader, leading the communists until his death in 1976. The march inspired many young soldiers to come fight for mao's red army, and defeated the nationalists in 1949. Mao gave hope to the oppressed communists in a nationlists area of the world.
