Race Relations in America
By Savi Krumenauer
Whether the result of consequence of colonialism or resent migration internationally, ethnic diversity has become a more prominent feature of many contemporary democracies. In the importance of ethnicity in structuring people's identities, we have somehow incorporated ethnicity into people's political behaviors. Ethnic minority members with higher socio economics statuses usually leads to lower emphasis on ethnicity when forming one's political opinions.
In times of crisis, chaos, and hurt, our country points fingers to where the bad guy is. We start to argue because we all have different opinions. We start to divide ourselves. And this is where we, the United States of America, are separating more and more. We have divided into blacks and whites, men and women, legal citizens and immigrants, rich and poor, gay and straight, and it may because of the leadership or lack of leadership from our President, and the lack of care he has for specific people, and lack of effort he is giving to try and help make our country better instead of dividing us more, when we need to come together to come up with solutions together.
We are united by our humanity. When did any of these subjects become more important than someone’s life. There are many people who are doing good and fighting evil, making change, and we commence and applaud them for their boldness and courage.
There have been athletes from every football team in the country, mostly black, kelt, stood with arms interlocked with one another, sat down or refused to be on the field with the national anthem is being played. And this is all the response to President Trump. “Wouldn't you love to see one of those NFL owners, when someone disrespects our flag, to say ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now?’ “He’s hired!” Which Trump said a political rally in Alabama, in response to NFL players taking action to peacefully protest the social injustices, while the anthem was playing at a game.
After the 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, started this statement, he was not signed the following football season. He took his status, privilege, and wealth to help certain organizations and protests. Creating his own campaign “ Million Dollar Pledge” to help fight oppression of all kinds globally. As of now he has donated $800,00 dollars, and pledged to donate 100k a month for 10 months, to over 40 organizations.
“No matter what I have to sacrifice, if you see wrong in this world, you must say it is wrong,” Colin Kaepernick.
# Black Lives Matter began as a love note put out on social media to African-Americans all over by Alicia Garza, in response to see in the killing of innocent 17 year old Trayvon Martin. This began a movement after people from all over the world started sending their love out to the family, friends, and others who have been affected by police violence. Alicia hand in hand with Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi had created an international activist movement, that campaigns against violence and systemic racism towards black people.
BLM usually protests speaking out against police killings of blacks, border issues, and racial inequality in the USA’s criminal justice system. BLM progress has made huge impacts on the U.S. such as putting their demands into words and onto paper, with a list of policies and solutions to demilitarizing law enforcement to unionize industries and decriminalizing drugs. They won a lawsuit against Baton Rouge police. BLM was given a megaphone at the Democratic National Convention, their action got Bill Clinton to say the movement was powerful enough to get underneath the President's skin. Which leads into how they managed to get an invitation for the BLM movement and their activists into the White House, and repeatedly invited back. Through all their progress and accomplishments BLM has made, they will not stop fighting for equality and justice.
Other outstanding leaders are Ciara Taylor, founder of “Dream Defenders”, that is a community organized collective that fights for social justice and boldly challenges the status quo.
Ashley Jackson, the director of the “Humans Rights Campaign”, where she Campaigns LGBQ+ rights.
Maya Wiley, having a long fight for a more just society with NAACP Legal Defence and Education Fund, the American Civil Liberties Union and the open Society Institute.
Michelle Alexander, releasing groundbreaking book “The New Jim Crow” illustrates the link between slavery and the industrial prison complex.
